Broncos Boys Fall to Hastings in Overtime

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Joe Tino made all six of his free throw tries in overtime to lift the Hastings boys basketball team to 31-26 victory over visiting Bronxville Wednesday at Hastings High School.

“We missed too many free throws and didn’t shoot well from the field,” Bronxville coach Brian Senior said. “We thought we could pressure the ball using our advantage with our backcourt. But you can’t win games shooting 12 for 44 from two-point range and 1-12 from three-point range.”

The Yellow Jackets (4-2) rebounded from Monday’s loss at Woodlands despite struggling to score throughout the game as Bronxville (1-2) used a pressing defense to limit Hastings’ ability to run.

Despite playing from behind for most of the game and missing several free throw chances, Bronxville hung close until co-captain Gibbs Lilly made three free throws in the final seconds of the game to send it into overtime tied at 25-25.

Quran Robinson’s two three-pointers helped give the Yellows Jackets a 15-11 halftime lead as both teams struggled to score. Dillon Healy’s three-pointer stretched the lead to 18-14 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter and the Jackets finished the quarter up 20-16.

Robinson found his way back into the game in fourth-quarter crunch time and made a big layup to give the Jackets a 25-21 lead.

“We sometimes depend too much on looking for three-pointers, so I tried to be aggressive to the basket,” Robinson said. “I want to be unselfish and look for teammates, but when the lane is open, you have to go to the basket.”
