Temperatures continued to flirt with the 100-degree mark on Tuesday, leading Eastchester officials to designate rooms at Lake Isle to provide protection from the overwhelming sun.
As of Tuesday morning, the Tuckahoe Community Center had not yet opened as a center, as it has in the past. John D’Arco, the director of the community center, said that it’s not a popular spot, even during the hottest summer days.
“In the five or six years that we’ve been doing it, I don’t think anyone has ever come in for that reason,” he said. “The people who come would have been there whether it was 90 or 60 degrees.”
Bronxville Village Administrator Harry Porr said that while no formal cooling center has been set up in the village, the public library will be open from 1 to 9 p.m. for people who need to cool off. Otherwise, as part of the town of Eastchester, residents can flock to the country club for relief.
In the past, cooling centers have not been popular destinations for residents during heat spikes, who instead choose to make use of the club’s pool complex, or otherwise hunkered down in their homes. During heat waves, several hundred residents visit the pool on weekdays, which is more similar to what is expected during a warm weekend.
