If you could create a new law what would it be? What if your idea had a chance of becoming a law that impacts more than 19 million New Yorkers?

Well thanks to State Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, (88th District), middle school students in grades 6 to 8 living in Scarsdale, Eastchester, Tuckahoe, Broxville, Pelham, Pelham Manor and parts of New Rochelle and White Plains, will have a chance to do just that during the "There Ought To Be a Law" essay contest.

Interested students should write an essay (no more than 750 words) that describes their proposed idea for a law.

The selected student will get an opportunity to join Paulin at the State Capital where they will present their proposed law to members of the New York State Assembly. Second- and third-place winners will receive an officials Assembly citations.

Paulin said students should consider the following questions while writing:

  • What's the problem that needs a legislative solution?
  • What's your solution? Be as detailed as possible.
  • What's the background of the problem? Are there are statistics, reports, historical information, or even personal stories to back up the need for the law?
  • How much money, if any, will the idea cost?
  • Who do you think would support this idea? Who would oppose it?

"Please take this important opportunity to make positive change in New York, learn about your government and the state legislative process, and have your voice heard at the State Capitol," said Paulin.
