BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - If you are looking to avoid blood transfusions because of religious, health or personal reasons, Lawrence Hospital Center is now offering alternatives, said Debra Abreu, its bloodless medicine coordinator.
"Everyone who comes in to Lawrence Hospital as a patient is given the option to choose safe alternatives to blood transfusions," she said. "We want the whole community to be aware of this."
As part of her job, Abreu acts as a liaison among families, patients and physicians. Your physician will discuss what alternatives will work best for you.
"My goal is to make the community aware that when they come to Lawrence Hospital, they can choose whether or not to have a blood transfusion. If a patient wants to be a part of our program, I will review alternatives with them in detail and when they select the best approach, it becomes part of their health record here at Lawrence,” said the New Rochelle resident.
Abreu has been coordinating bloodless medicine programs for the past 20 years.
