Born March 12, 1915 at Fort Williams in South Portland, Maine, Fenzel graduated from St. Michael’s Prep in Brooklyn, N.Y. and attended Fordham University in the Bronx. He spent his professional career in the steamship industry, retiring as executive vice president of Maritime Company of the Philippines in New York City.
He was one of the first presidents of the Huntley Civic Association; a past president of the Immaculate Conception Church Holy Name Society; a past Trustee of Immaculate Conception Church; a Past Grand Knight of the John A. Keogh Council Knights of Columbus; a boy scout troop leader; a coach of the Eastchester Cardinals little league team, and was active in the Eastchester Republican Party, along with many other charitable and civic services throughout the decades.
He is a combat veteran of World War II, serving as a company commander in the 215th AAA regiment in North Africa, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia, and as a captain and battalion commander of the 369th Engineer Combat Battalion in France, Germany, and Austria.
He moved his new family to Eastchester in 1950 when he was called back to active duty for the Korean War, and has remained an Eastchester resident since. He was married for 54 years to the late Catherine Curtin Fenzel, before her death in 2002. Together. they have four children, Alfred M Fenzel, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Joseph E. Fenzel, of Mequon, Wis.; Peter D. Fenzel, of Mahwah, N.J.; and Marianne C. Fenzel, of Eastchester; 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Fenzel attributes his longevity to the love of two remarkable women: his late wife and his daughter.
