Lawrence Hospital Doc Saves Lives, Even at Home

Most people don't like bringing their work home with them. But several months ago, Dr. Michael Lahn of Pelham had his work come to him.

Lahn, an emergency room doctor at Lawrence Hospital Center in Bronxville, was at home getting his children ready for school. Suddenly, a neighbor came running from a house across the street and began banging on the front door. When Lahn answered, the man said his wife had collapsed.

The two men rushed back to the house, where they found the woman on the bedroom floor. "It was obvious she was having a stroke," says Lahn. "I asked the husband if he had called 911. He hadn't, so we called. And when the ambulance arrived, I followed her to the LawrenceER."

Once there the woman's condition began to improve, although she could speak she wasn't making sense. But then her condition began to deteriorate again.

"We gave her a CAT scan and realized we had to do something," says Lahn."The immediate option was TPA [the 'clotbuster drug'], which we administered. Then I remembered meeting a doctor from the Westchester Medical Center at a lecture he'd given about a new stroke treatment that basically went in and sucked out the clot." Lahn called the doctor, who had the woman transferred to the Valhalla facility, where the procedure was performed in the angiography suite.

The end result? The woman recovered completely and returned to work, with no ill after effects. All in a day's work for Lahn, even if this time, he was "working from home."
