The Columbus Day Parade Committee named Vincent Vetrini as the grand marshal of this year’s event, while Joseph Luciano received the Monsignor Anthony Maltese Humanitarian Award and Scott Mikos was named recipient of the DiRubba Community Service Award.
Vetrini, a longtime supporter of the Columbus Day Parade Committee, is the co-founder of the Eastchester Youth Soccer Association, and owner of County Appliances in Stamford, Conn. Luciano, a lifelong resident, has been an active sports coach at various levels and is currently a member of the town’s Youth Sports Council. Mikos, president and chief executive officer of the Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corp, has been a volunteer there for more than a decade.
“The Committee chose exceptional honorees this year,” Town Supervisor Anthony Colavita said. “We are proud of each of them, and each has contributed greatly to the betterment of our town, Italian American heritage and are deserving of this distinction.
Festivities will begin Friday, when the Columbus Day Carnival opens at 6 p.m. with giveaways, a disc jockey and an opening night dance party at Lake Isle Country Club. The carnival will kick off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 and Sunday, Oct. 12, featuring live Italian music by The Next Step.
The annual parade will begin at 3:30 p.m., Sunday in the Immaculate Conception Church parking lot, and will travel up Main Street and through Route 22, ending on the grounds of Lake Isle. The day will conclude with a fireworks display at 9 p.m. The carnival will draw to a close on Monday, running from 1 to 6 p.m.
This year’s Columbus Day celebrations will also be a star-studded event, with "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Kathy Wakile promoting her book, “Indulge,” from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
