WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - At his annual State of the County address, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino celebrated several local residents, including those from Bronxville, Eastchester and Mount Vernon.

A special tribute was made to Eastchester resident Nancy Schiliro, who was present for the speech. Schiliro is a veteran of the Iraq war who was injured in 2009. She now works to help other injured veterans through the Project Odyssey, which is part of the Wounded Warrior Program.

Bronxville High School junior Mary Cain – who has set numerous track and field national records and is currently ranked third in the state – was also celebrated for her athletic accomplishments. She recently became the first high school student to win a national indoor championship in a decade when she won a meet in Albuquerque, N.M.

Two sets of foster parents – Anthony and Brenda Gears from Mount Vernon and Marisol and Eduardo Gonzalez of Scarsdale were also recognized for the aid they have provided both their neighborhoods and the county.

Other honorees included three Intel finalists: Jiayi Peng, of Horace Greeley High School; Chris Traver of Croton-Harmon High School; and Ossining resident Daniel McQuaid. Scott Vaccaro, owner of Captain Lawrence in Elmsford, and Maria and Pablo Morales, owners of Bake-Me-A-Wish in Peekskill, were also celebrated as small business success stories.
