BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- Benedict Spadaro, a Bronxville advocate for veterans, died on Sept. 30. He was 83.
Born on Nov. 6, 1927, Spadaro devoted many years of his life to veterans affairs. In 2005, he was responsible for a change in Gold Star Mother's Society's bylaws to permit entry of immigrant mothers of soldiers, sailors and Marines killed in combat. He served as director of Veterans Affairs for Westchester County during the 1980s.
After his retirement in 1992, Spadaro served on the Veterans Affairs' advisory committee on cemeteries until 2009. He was also partially responsible for the creation of the Gold Star Mothers Monument on Post Road in Eastchester.
Spadaro is survived by his son Donald Spadaro, his sister Diana Sgueglia, dear friend Peggy Bresson and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Winifred and brothers Joseph, John and Frank.
The funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scarsdale, with entombment to follow at Ferncliff Mausoleum in Hartsdale. Funeral arrangements were handled by Westchester Funeral Home in Eastchester.
