On Tuesday, May 12, members attended a cooking demonstration and sampling at the Reformed Church, which was co-sponsored by the Bronxville Senior Citizens and generously funded by a grant from The Junior League of Bronxville.

Local chef Nancy Contessa highlighted and prepared her tried-and-true recipes for “Healthy Summer Salads." Participants enjoyed the delicious salads while Contessa shared tips such as her best pick of fresh local produce to interesting olive oil and dressing choices.

The second event took place on Wednesday, May 13, when members enjoyed a sunny afternoon tour of the Gardens at Wave Hill. Often called "one of the greatest living works of art," Wave Hill is a 28-acre public garden and cultural center overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades, in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.

The tour provided an overview of Wave Hill’s carefully cultivated garden areas, extensive collection of rare and unusual shrubs, plants and trees, along with a general history of the property.  Following the tour, members dined on a scrumptious lunch with a wide selection of local and artisanal offerings at The Café in the historic Wave Hill House.

“Gramatan Village members loved the opportunity to celebrate spring and visit this beautiful property in seasonal bloom.” said Kathryn Urbina, member services/program and volunteer coordinator. “Lasting memories were created for the group in these gorgeous gardens that are located so close to home.”

Upcoming events sponsored by Gramatan Village include the following:

  • Sunday Afternoon at the Movies, “The Third Man,” at the Bronxville Public Library (May 31);
  • Open House at Gramatan Village, to learn about the benefits of membership (June 3);
  • Shopping and lunch at Stew Leonard’s in Yonkers (June 12);
