BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – For several weeks, youth participants from the Chapel School and Village Lutheran Church in Bronxville have been a part of a volunteer program to distribute meals to some of New York City’s most needy members.

Faculty members from the Chapel School were among those that descended upon New York City for a “Midnight Run” earlier this week. Volunteers distributed food, clothing, blankets and personal care items to homeless people in the city.

The program is designed to create a forum for trust, sharing and understanding between youth and disenfranchised members of the community. The school-wide effort included students as young as kindergarten and as old as eighth grade. They’ve been meeting each morning during their study hall leading up to the run.

In the last few weeks, each grade has been tasked with collecting certain food items that were then assembled and bagged by the elder students. The bagged meals were later brought into the city and distributed by members of the Chapel School staff. In all, more than 300 meals were distributed by the group.

Kate Porter, the school’s music teacher and a youth minister for the church, organized the midnight run. She said that it was an eye opening experience for the staff, which witnessed the struggles some individuals and family face on a daily basis.

The inaugural Midnight Run was such a success that the staff decided that it will be a biannual event, taking place once in April and once in October each year.

“There is so much that we all take for granted,” Porter said. “It really opens your eyes when you realize how much difference a small sandwich can make.”
