EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Richard Poccia, a Bronxville-native, has been awarded the Gold Leadership Award, the Junior Achievement USA’s most prestigious national award for volunteerism.

Poccia was one of 10 honorees that were selected from more than 187,000 volunteers to receive the award. The winners were celebrated at the Junior Achievement USA “Day on the Hill” event Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

The award winner has been involved with Junior Achievement USA since 1996, when he became a member of the board of directors and eventually the chair of the New York board. He also served on the organization’s executive committee and as chairman of the audit committee.

Poccia is a partner at PwC, a company dedicated to improving the lives of various communities through fundraising and consulting. Last year, under Poccia’s leadership, the PwC recruited, trained and mobilized 250 volunteers who taught more than 100 classes to no less than 2,500 New York students. PwC also organized fundraisers to obtain money from personal and corporate sponsors for local schools.

When probed, Poccia deflected praise away from himself and instead gave it to his colleagues at PwC.

“This award is a testimony to the people of PwC who have consistently demonstrated a desire to give back to the community and provide youth with the encouragement, resources and opportunities they need to succeed in school and in life,” he said.

During their day on the Hill, Poccia and the other awardees met with Congressional leaders to discuss Junior Achievement USA’s future endeavors.

Joseph Peri, the president of Junior Achievement of New York praised Poccia for the work he has done in more than a decade at PwC, including his efforts to mobilize local volunteers and running the Junior Achievement Bowl-a-Thon fundraisers.

“The local business community has been extremely supportive of Junior Achievement’s goal of inspiring local students to succeed in the new global economy,” Peri said. “He (Poccia) is a remarkable example of that spirit of generosity. He helps students learn the knowledge and skill hey need to own their economic success, plan for the future and make smart choices.”
