Bronxville Nurse Is a Caring Volunteer

Danielle LeStrange, RN, brings a touch of caring for her community to most everything she does. From serving as nurse manager of the emergency department at Lawrence Hospital Center in Bronxville to performing a variety of volunteer activities in her community in Eastchester, she finds a way to put people’s needs first.

Saying the emergency room does not have a typical day, LeStrange explains, “We are seeing people and they are not at their best. When you come into the ER, you are in some form of distress. It can be very difficult to help people deal with that. A good day is when you feel like you were able to get to your patients and give excellent care.”

LeStrange says she knew she wanted to be a nurse when she was very young. Now in the profession more than 25 years, she still loves her job so much that she encourages others to consider nursing.

“Nursing is such a great profession. It is so flexible. There are so many things that you can do, not only professionally but also personally.” Married and the mother of three boys, LeStrange is involved in many volunteer activities, including Eastchester Communities That Care, which focuses on drinking and drug prevention activities, especially geared toward middle school children.

She has found that cottage meetings make people more willing to gather and talk about issues facing their tweens and teens. Comparing them to Tupperware parties, LeStrange said get-togethers in a neighbor’s house make everyone more comfortable.

LeStrange has also worked with the Eastchester Blue Devils football program to educate them about concussions, and she attends her local middle school career day each year. “I tell them that nursing is the most wonderful job they will ever love. I tell them the truth, that it can be difficult, but it is so rewarding…. If I can leave my corner of the world a better place, then I have had a good life and accomplished something.”
