Bronxville High School Senior Indira Dasgupta, a member of Courtney Alan’s advanced arts class, has won the Concordia College Osilas Gallery stArt Regional High School Exhibition Award of Excellence for her take on a “Self-Portrait Wearing a Kurta.”

Dasgupta’s drawing was part of a project in her Art 3 class, where students were asked to draw full-length, self-portraits that convey or evoke emotions and a sense of self. She utilized black charcoal on kraft paper, posing herself in what Alan described as “a simple pose,” wearing a traditional Bengali kurta.

The senior’s drawing was prominently featured at the Osilas Gallery this month, along with projects from other talented high school artists in the county. In total, 78 students from more than 26 high schools had their work displayed and judged by a panel of seven artists and curators, with Dasgupta’s being named best in show.

According to Alan, her student’s work “stood out for its technique and creativity,” describing her student as a “meticulous, independent, dedicated and focused artist,” who seeks perfection in her craft.

“Indira’s self-portrait is striking. She was able to represent herself with precise realism and capture a unique expression,” she added. “She rendered her clothing so well that you can get a sense of the texture and folds of her kurta, the softness of her jeans and the variety of textures of her winter boots. She represents herself in a powerful, yet relaxed pose.

“Indira wont he award because she created an extremely successful work. She took time to carefully figure out the texture and details that make this work stand out. At the (Osilas Gallery) reception, people were coming up to her because they recognized her from the drawing. Many people wanted to congratulate her on a job well done.”
