BRONXVILLE, N.Y. For two years in a row, faculty at Concordia College have been able to lift their heads a little higher knowing they've beaten Iona College for bragging rights in softball. This week's game, however, meant a lot more than that.
We came together last year with Iona to do this and we wanted to raise money while we did it, said Concordias Kathleen Hymes, who is the assistant registrar at the Bronxville university.
Each of the last two years, the host school has chosen a charity to benefit from the game. This year, HOPE Community Services, a food pantry and soup kitchen in New Rochelle was the beneficiary of $1,570 raised between the two schools.
We chose a food bank to donate to because with the way the economy is right now, food banks are over extended, Hymes said. The night we presented the check to HOPE, they had 120 people from area they were serving.
Summer is a struggle, so the timing for this is fabulous, said Executive Director Carole Troum of HOPE Community Services. This donation will go toward feeding 600 kids who are registered with the pantry. We also provide over 700 bags of groceries a week for people in need."
The final score of Monday's game was 5-2. The winners received a trophy and game ball that is on display outside of Dean Sherry Frasers office at Concordia.
On the display for the whole staff to see, Hymes said. We get to brag about that for a year, but we cant wait to get back out there and help another organization.
Hymes who joined Regina Reilly, her sister-in-law and a faculty member at Iona College to create this event, hopes more teams can get involved.
Wed like to do a tournament next year and have Sarah Lawrence, Pace and Mercy involved. Wed even go to Fordham, she said.
