Following extensive inspections of the conditions, officials deemed that several New Rochelle lakes and ponds are open to the public until the temperatures break - which may not be for more than a week.
As of Wednesday morning, the bodies of water open for skating include Paine Lake, the South Lake of Huguenot Park, Twin Lakes at New Rochelle High School and Carpenter’s Pond. Each will be marked with signage indicating that skating is now permitted.
Staff members from the Parks and Recreation Department will be monitoring the locations carefully and the surfaces will remain open as long as conditions allow.
“While outdoor ice skating is a wonderful experience, skaters should realize that outdoor ice is not as smooth and consistent as artificial ice at a skating rink, Parks and Recreation Interim Commissioner Bill Zimmermann noted. “The ice that forms on ponds and lakes can be rougher, bumpier and with crevices. So in addition to staying in the designated areas, we are encouraging skaters to be extra careful on the ice.”
