The tri-state area celebrates National Arbor Day on the last Friday in April, but many states observe the holiday on different dates throughout the year based on best tree planting times in their area, according to the National Arbor Day Foundation.

The first American Arbor Day was started by journalist J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City. He and his wife were nature lovers and when he became editor of the newspaper there, he spread the word about the importance of trees.

On April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted in Nebraska and April 22 -- Morton's birthday -- was dubbed Arbor Day by the Governor of Nebraska.

The Tree City USA program was started by the Arbor Day Foundation and has been greening up cities and towns across America since 1976. It is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees.

Municipalities achieve Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

Connecticut has 18 Tree City USA Communities.

New Jersey has 148 Tree City USA Communities.

New York State has 114 Tree City USA Communities.
