Sarah Lawrence College Hosts ArtsWestchester Showcase

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Sarah Lawrence College will showcase faculty and alumni honored by ArtsWestchester during its “50 for 50” celebration at 8 p.m. Friday in the Heimbold Visual Arts Center, 915 Kimball Ave.

The program of new work is part of the county arts organization’s celebration of its 50th anniversary. A free reception precedes the event at 7 p.m.

The showcase of new work will feature Sarah Lawrence music faculty director and composer Chester Biscardi, graduate writing program director and novelist Brian Morton, poetry faculty member and 10th New York state poet laureate Marie Howe, theater faculty member and choreographer David Neumann and alumna choreographer and past artist-in-residence Maxine Sherman.

Biscardi will present audio excerpts from “The Gift of Life” for soprano and piano with text by Emily Dickinson, Denise Levertov and Thornton Wilder.

Morton will read a new short story, while Howe will read a selection of poems from her new book, "Magdalene, The Seven Devils."

Neumann will present an excerpt from a current work, and Sherman will present an excerpt from a work in progress, “Forest to City: City to Forest,” performed by dancer Treasure Brooks.

The program is presented by the Sarah Lawrence College Graduate Writing Program, Writing Institute and Graduate and Professional Studies in collaboration with the Hudson Valley Writers Center.
