Pelham Screens 'Fences', Hosts Actor Q&A

PELHAM, N.Y. -- A star of the new film "Fences" will field questions after the show at the Wednesday, Dec. 21 screening at the Pelham Picture House.

Mount Vernon native Denzel Washington is the director and star of "Fences," which also stars Viola Davis and Stephen Henderson. The three were part of the 2010 Broadway revival and return in their same roles on film.

"Fences" the movie is adapted from the play of the same name by August Wilson. It won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1987 Tony Award for Best Play.

Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, the story is about an African-American father who is struggling with race relations in the US, while trying to raise his family and come to terms with his life.

Washington and Davis have been nominated for Golden Globes for their performances in the film. 

After the screening, The Picture House critic-in-residence Marshall Fine will moderate a discussion and Q&A with Henderson. 

He is best known for his stage work and portrayed Jim Bono in the Broadway revival of "Fences," for which he received a Tony nomination as a supporting actor, as well as the Richard Seff Award from Actor’s Equity.

The film starts at 7:30 p.m. at the theater, 175 Wolfs Lane, Pelham.

Oscar winner Washington, 61, grew up in Mount Vernon where his father worked for the water department and was the pastor of the Church of God in Christ for 60 years. His mother ran a beauty parlor in town, where he started working at age 11.

Still connected to his hometown, he recently went to visit former Mount Vernon librarian, Connie Mauro, of his youth, who now lives in an Atlanta nursing home, the Daily Voice reported.
