As they await one final state inspection before they can open their doors to the public, top hospital brass will host a presentation at the Bronxville Public Library so the community can meet the doctors and learn about how the lab will benefit the treatment of the heart.

The lab will offer a series of advanced, minimally invasive cardiac procedures, such as coronary stenting, heart biopsies, cardiac imaging and pacemaker implantation. It is one of the few labs of its kind in Westchester County.

Mark Apfelbaum, the director of the lab, said it also would provide the hospital the opportunity to immediately and effectively treat patients suffering from a heart attack by swiftly clearly blockages in arteries.

“The purpose is to provide tests and to continually improve how wee treat heart disease. This is the best way to treat a heart attack. Before this, you’d have to take a clot dissolving drug that took hours or transport them to a hospital with a lab,” he said. “This is literally a life-saving step.”

Laura Forese, the president of the NYP Healthcare System said they saw how many people in Westchester travelled to Manhattan to utilize cardiac catheterization labs and realized there was a need in Bronxville.

“When NYP teamed with Lawrence last year, we promised to make major investments in this hospital and this community,” she said. “This is the first big one. We saw how many people were coming down to NYP and we saw an opportunity to bring that here.”

The lab is adjacent to the emergency room and will be staffed 24 hours a day by rotating teams of interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologists from Columbia University.

“This facility is an outstanding addition to the hospital,” said Ed Dinan, the president and CEO of NYP/Lawrence Hospital. “We’re providing patients in Bronxville and Westchester access to the highest quality of cardiac care right in their backyard.”

Forese said while this is the first “major investment” at NYP/Lawrence, it will not be the last.

“Later this year, we’re opening a new complete cancer center, we’re opening eight new operating rooms and many, many other innovations,” she added. “This is just the first of many activities and services, some of which have not been seen in Westchester County before.”

The public presentation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 7 at the Yeager Room in the Bronxville Public Library. To reserve a spot, call (914) 787-5000.
