Dr. Barzilai has provocatively entitled his talk “Figuring How to Die Young at a Very Old Age.”

Breakfast will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the program starting soon after 10 a.m. and followed by a question-and-answer session. Community members are welcome but the synagogue requests those planning to attend RSVP by calling the office at (914) 725-5175, or by emailing to office@sstte.org, with “Barzilai Breakfast” in the subject line.

Dr. Barzilai and his research team have been featured in articles in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, as well as in Forbes and National Geographic magazines and on National Public Radio. His landmark work on aging began when he launched The LonGenity Genes Project in 1998, conducting genetic research on more than 500 healthy elderly people between the ages of 95 and 112—and on their children.

The identification of longevity genes by Dr. Barzilai’s team of researchers could lead to new drug therapies that might help people live longer, healthier lives and avoid, or significantly delay, age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Dan Alpert, co-chairman of the synagogue’s men’s club group, said, “given that seniors and soon-to-be seniors comprise the fastest growing population group in the United States as a whole, it will be quite important to hear what Dr. Barzilai will share with us about why some people can and do live longer than others.”

Richard Primoff, co-chairman with Dr. Alpert of the Synagogue Brotherhood, said, “regardless of age, everyone can benefit from hearing how they and their parents may stay healthier and sharper as they age. We thank Dr. Barzilai for agreeing to speak at our synagogue and expect a strong turnout from among our membership and the local community as well.”
