Häagen-Dazs Will Unveil New Store In White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Häagen-Dazs, which is opening its newest store in Westchester this Saturday in White Plains, may be a made-up word, but the ice cream brand has churned up a real following, not only in the United States, but across the globe.

Häagen-Dazs's mascot, Coneman," shown dancing with customers in 2010 in California, will make an appearance at the ice cream maker's latest Westchester store in White Plains.

In keeping with the richness of its frozen dairy product, Häagen-Dazs’s new shop is located in The Westchester, an upscale mall in the heart of the county seat.

It is celebrating the shop’s grand opening Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. by giving away a free scoop of ice cream to the first 500 customers.

Patrons also will have the chance to win free ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet and gelato for a year. That’s $480 worth of premium yumminess, the company said.

Coneman, the ice cream maker’s dancing mascot, will pose with customers.

Häagen-Dazs, although it has an exotic name, was actually birthed in 1961 in the Bronx by Reuben and Rose Mattus. The Mattuses started with three flavors: vanilla, chocolate and coffee.

The first retail store was opened in Brooklyn in 1976.

Since then, franchises have sprung up all over the world, including India, China and Brazil.

Reuben Mattus invented the Danish-sounding moniker as a tribute to Denmark’s exemplary treatment of its Jewish citizens during World War II.

Earlier packaging reportedly showed an outline of the Scandinavian country.

Mattus’s daughter, Doris Hurley, in an interview with PBS in the late 1990s, said her dad had sat at the family’s kitchen table making up nonsense words until he found a combination he liked.

The Westchester is at 125 Westchester Ave.

The Häagen-Dazs is on Retail Level 3, the Crate and Barrel wing, according to the mall’s store directory.
