Rev. Carl Maiello, Chaplain of the Eastchester Police and Fire Departments, gave the invocation to begin the service. He was followed by Commander Joe Mammana of American Legion Post 979, who led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Eastchester Town Supervisor Anthony S. Colavita led the memorial service.
"Today is a day of remembrance. We remember the images and sounds of that day which have been forever seared in our minds," Colavita said. "We remember that morning 13 years ago this day, this country was attacked and lay devastated and at its weakest. But by the end of that day, this nation was at its finest!”
The Town of Eastchester illuminated nine candles, one for each of the town's lost residents: Ronald Bucca, Mary Caufield, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Michael McHugh, Dennis Moroney, Diana O’Connor, Edward Ryan, Thomas Shubert and Jeffrey Walz.
The candles and a plaque with those names will remain for nine days on the mantle in the Town Hall lobby with a Sept. 11th painting on display.
