Descendants Of Anne Hutchinson To Visit Eastchester

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Descendants of a 17th century woman whose life as a spiritual leader and death at the hands of natives resulted in a parkway being named in her honor are to appear at Eastchester Town Hall.

The direct descendants of Anne Hutchinson are scheduled to visit Town Hall’s Community Room at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. The appearance is the first time people living in the area have had the opportunity to meet the family locally, according to event organizers.

The visit is expected to be among the final stops for the Hutchinson family members during a five-day, three-state celebration of the 425th anniversary of Hutchinson’s birth in England in 1591. She later moved to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.

“Most 17th century voices are silent, but Anne Hutchinson’s voice can still be heard,” said Eve LePlante, author of “American Jezebel.”

The program will focus on the previously unknown legacy of Anne Hutchinson on lower Westchester and the Bronx after her tragic death in an Indian massacre in 1642, according to event organizers.

In addition to meeting the Hutchinson descendants, attendees will hear Lissa Halen, curator of the Eastchester Historical Society, conduct a brief visual slide show on the history of the Hutchinson River, according to organizers.

The event is being sponsored by the newly formed Anne Marbury Hutchison Foundation, Founding Mothers and the Eastchester Historical Society.
