Want To Do Dinner Better? Westchester Mom Has A New Meal Service Solution

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- A mom (and homegrown chef) who values the ritual of the nightly family dinner but understands the challenges -- she has two small kids -- has started a new healthy, organic, locally-sourced meal-kit delivery service for families in lower Westchester.

Simply Gather is the brainchild of Larchmont resident Caren Weintraub, who has a Masters in Public Health and always dreamed of marrying her passions for food and health to help people live better lives.

She is launching the business -- it officially starts its food deliveries the week of April 24 -- with her husband and business partner, Jonah, a former chef who worked in multiple restaurants including Nobu Matusihisa in Aspen, CO and La Goulue in NYC.

After trying other services herself -- dinner, she said, can be complicated as much as everyone wants to do it -- she felt the meals weren't palatable to both the parents and kids and didn't meet her expectations from a health perspective (with limited whole grains, high in saturated fats, etc.).

Hence, her new service which offers meals designed to allow adults to feel like adults and kids feel like kids. That means plainer options for the pickier eaters (without the additional work) and bolder flavors for adults.

Sample menus include Wild Mushroom Pizza with Spinach Pecan Salad, Wild Cod Fish Tacos with Cabbage Slaw, Beans and Brown Rice, and Mediterranean Organic Chicken Breast with Quinoa and Roasted Vegetables.

To keep it local, she's partnering with area Westchester and tri-state area restaurants and vendors to source ingredients such as produce, meat and fish, grains, multigrain pizza crust and whole grain pastas.

All meals are designed to take 30 minutes or less to prepare with minimal prep,

"Garlic, ginger and veggies will be chopped, some of the more time intense sauces will be provided, herbs already picked and cleaned," she said.

The recipes are created – as an option – to result in two separate dishes: something simpler for the kids, and the other more sophisticated for the adults, with one workstream.

"While the kids can get a plainer meal if they prefer, they are also exposed to different/new ingredients than they may otherwise be," she said. "And you never know they may end up liking something new – like artichokes or quinoa."

There are also multiple vegetarian and gluten-free options available each week.

Right now the service is open to Larchmont, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle and Pelham, but she's planning on growing her base as she expands.

The service is also "green" with reusable totes, biodegradable containers, and bags.
