Broken Bow won a gold medal for their “Old Split-Foot” in the Belgian-style Strong Specialty Ale category at the festival, which brought nearly 2,000 breweries from around the country to compete against one another in several categories.

The Great American Beer Festival attracted 60,000 people, where more than 7,000 beers were entered in 96 categories. The entries were then judged by an expert panel representing 12 countries. 286 medals were ultimately awarded.

Judges described Old Split-Foot as “a full-bodied Belgian ale with a complex flavor of blended fruit, honey and cloves.” Brown Bow describes it as “an intense and complex ale with a rich, creamy head. The nose is a fruity bouquet topped by honey and clove notes that finishes with a spicy alcohol warmth."

Other gold medalists from New York included the Adirondack Pub and Brewery in Lake George (wood and barrel-aged sour beer category), Brewery Ommegang in Mohawk Valley (Belgian-style witbier) and Great South Bay Brewery on Long Island (honey beer).

In a statement, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo congratulated the four Empire State breweries that earned gold medals at the festival.

“New York is home to some of the best breweries in the world, that are second to none,” he stated. “Congratulations to this year’s winners, who make us proud and are leaders in a booming industry that is creating jobs, increasing tourism and generating economic activity in every corner of the state.”
