At Long Last, Subway Franchise Opens In Tuckahoe

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. - Following months of meetings, planning, local variances and discussions, a local boy has come home to open a Subway franchise restaurant at 73 Main Street.

It wasn’t always easy for Tuckahoe High School graduate Frank Madaio, but after gaining the necessary approvals from the local Planning and Zoning Boards, he celebrated the soft opening of his new location right next to Village Hall.

When the proposal was announced several months ago, it came under heavy fire from residents who feared that by allowing Subway to set up in the village, it will serve as a gateway for other chains looking to populate a suburb on the rise.

However, Madaio envisions a Subway that will see a high volume of foot traffic from local businesses and commuters, who will all be within walking distance of the restaurant on a daily basis. He and the developers scouted several locations while the process was ongoing before finding the perfect spot on Main Street, in the heart of the village.

In the first few days since the opening, Madaio and his employees have enjoyed a steady stream of customers into Subway.

“We looked at a location on Columbus, but there wasn’t enough foot traffic. This location affords us access to more people on a daily basis,” developers said before gaining approval. “We want people to be able to walk over, get a sandwich and go back to their office or go to the park. We don’t need parking.”

It will be a local, grassroots effort for Madaio, who hopes to benefit the community with more than just delicious sandwiches; he’s also supplying local employment and foot traffic for nearby establishments.

“I was interested in opening up a Subway near home, in my community, and I felt there was a need, so we opened here in Tuckahoe,” he said. “I thought there was a need in the community, I never saw anything around here or in nearby towns, so I thought it was something we needed.”

Tuckahoe Mayor Steve Ecklond praised Madaio for bringing his business back to the village, and for employing many local men and women.

“There’s a lot of familiar faces on this staff, there’s a lot of local people working here,” he said. “It’s nice to have a local guy, who is employing local people in a local business. That’s very important to us.”
